Every Musician Is a Storyteller
Each of you carries a unique and meaningful story.
When we hear someone share their story, what moves us isn’t the perfection of their words…it’s their sincerity. Yes, the storyteller might strive to be clear, expressive, and convincing, but what resonates with us is the authenticity behind the message. It’s the heart and effort they pour into their words that truly stays with us. It’s not about flawless delivery…it’s about being real. The same holds true for music.
You, as students, each have something valuable and unique to communicate through your music. Your journey as a pianist, a performer, and an artist is your own, and it’s rooted in your personal expression. The goal is never to reach perfection-it’s to connect with the music and with your audience in an honest, meaningful way. The music you play has the power to tell a story, to share your emotions, and to communicate your thoughts-if you allow it to.
This is why we practice!
We don’t practice simply to make each note perfect; we practice so that we can be free to express ourselves fully and authentically. Technique is the tool that enables your voice to be heard clearly-but it should never get in the way of your message. The work you put into polish your craft is important, but it’s always in service of something greater: your ability to speak through the music.
We know that no performance will ever be flawless, and that’s okay! What matters is your effort, your commitment to showing up with sincerity and presence. When the time comes to perform, don’t worry about achieving perfection. Instead, focus on being fully present in the moment, sharing your story with the audience, and playing with all the heart you’ve put into your practice.
So keep going!
Keep practicing with intention and purpose.
Keep making music that is true to who you are.
And most importantly, keep sharing your story-genuinely, bravely, and with love for the music.
Your journey is unique, and every step you take matters. Embrace the imperfections, trust in your process, and remember that the beauty of your music lies in your ability to connect through it.
