To My Students: Lessons Beyond the Classroom

You know, regardless of your major or concentration-what you’re studying specifically-our ultimate goal is the same: to glorify the Lord and to fulfill the purpose He has for us in all that we do.

Of course, the goal of this class has been to help you become a better sight-reader. To build up the tools and habits needed to grow as a musician. But there’s something deeper at the heart of it. The real reason we work hard is so that we can be best equipped to do the work of the Lord.

That’s why I’ve been encouraging you guys to keep at it-little by little, consistently, day by day. Because those are the habits that lead to true improvement, in anything. But especially in serving God with excellence.

And when you truly understand that purpose, it changes your motivation. You’re not just practicing for a grade, or even for a performance...you’re doing it to honor God.

So when you feel burnt out, when things feel overwhelming...fix your eyes on the Lord. He will not only give you strength, but He’ll remind you why you’re working so hard in the first place.
